Western Australia: A Powerhouse with Limited Influence
Western Australia (WA) is the economic backbone of Australia, thanks to its world-class resources sector. In the 2022-23 financial year, WA alone contributed 9% of the national GDP and accounted for nearly two-thirds of the country’s resource exports. Despite this massive economic output, WA’s influence in federal decision-making remains disproportionately small.
My Plan
Underrepresented in Canberra
WA has only 16 out of 151 seats in the House of Representatives. While this reflects its population share, it does not reflect its economic importance. This imbalance raises serious questions about whether WA is getting a fair say in national policies that directly impact its future.
The GST Redistribution Controversy
The federal government redistributes revenue through the Goods and Services Tax (GST), often shifting wealth from WA to other states. Historically, WA has received less than its fair share due to its strong fiscal capacity from resource royalties. Even with the GST floor adjustment, WA is projected to receive $7.257 billion in 2024–25, significantly less than what it contributes.
The Message is Clear:
WA is Australia’s economic engine, yet it remains underrepresented and underfunded. It’s time for action! The government must recognize WA’s true value and ensure it receives its fair share.
Note: All the numbers are just rough approximations. The actuals can greatly differ from my numbers.
